AMERICAN CIVIL WAR, 1861-1865 The bitter four year struggle that divided a nation eventually lead to the defeat of the southern forces, and ended the dream of a separate Confederate States of America. The early attempts at ending the war quickly soon gave way to the large fierce encounters such as Shiloh, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Nashville and the great sieges of Vicksburg and Petersburg. The end result, however, was the emergence of the United States as a major world power at the dawn of the twentieth century. MM |
