  Soldiers of the World:

FIRST MAORI WAR:  1845 - 1847 (NZ Land Wars)

  First Maori

When the British Army went to with the Maori, they were
expecting little more than a short excursion against a poorly
  armed and unsophisticated enemy.
During the three separate campaigns conducted in the
North Island of New Zealand, the British were given several
  harsh lessons in bush warfare.
The most notable actions occurred during the Northern War
(March 1845-January 1846) in the Bay of Islands against the
warriors of Hone Heke and Kawiti.

  THE NEW ZEALAND ARMY:

  NZ Army

The origins of the New Zealand Army date back to 1845 when
the militia was first called out to assist in the operations during
  the First Maori War.
A permanent force was established in 1867 with the formation
of the Armed Constabulary. New Zealand forces have served
in all the major world conflicts since the South African War in
1899, through the First and Second World Wars, Korea,
Vietnam and on to numerous peace-keeping duties in the
Middle East, Bosnia and the Pacific.

  AMERICAN CIVIL WAR:  1861 - 1865

The bitter four year struggle that divided a nation eventually
lead to the defeat of the southern forces, and ended the dream
of a separate Confederate States of America.
The early attempts at ending the war quickly soon gave way to
the large fierce encounters such as Shiloh, Antietam,
Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Nashville and the
great sieges of Vicksburg and Petersburg.
The end result, however, was the emergence of the United
States as a major world power at the dawn of the
  twentieth-century.
